Sunny Days Equal Science Learning

When the sun comes out, so does a world of discovery for young children. At Victory of the Lamb Lutheran Preschool, we know that sunny days aren’t just beautiful.  They’re packed with opportunities for hands‑on science and quality learning experiences. Outdoors, children naturally observe, question, experiment, and explore God’s creation in ways that build curiosity and confidence.

Here are some of the joyful science experiences our preschoolers dive into when the sunshine calls them outside.

Shadow Science: Nature’s Moving Art

Sunny days turn the playground into a giant science lab! Children love exploring how light creates shadows, and how those shadows change throughout the day.

  • Nature Shadows: Using sticks, leaves, and toys, children trace shadows and notice how the sun’s position affects their shape and size.
  • Dancing Shadows: When children move, their shadows move too! This helps them understand cause and effect in a playful, full‑body way.
  • Shadow Chasing: A favorite game that teaches observation, prediction, and spatial awareness as children try to “catch” their own or a friend’s shadow.

Shadow play builds early understanding of light, position, and time, all while keeping children active and engaged.

Gardening: Science That Grows With Us

Our garden beds become living classrooms as children learn how plants grow and what they need to thrive.

  • Plant Science: Children explore roots, stems, leaves, and flowers, discovering how each part helps the plant survive.
  • Life Cycles: From seed to sprout to bloom, children witness the miracle of growth firsthand.
  • Measuring Growth: Using rulers or simple comparison tools, children track how their plants change over time, an early introduction to data collection and observation.

Gardening teaches responsibility, patience, and wonder as children care for God’s creation and watch it flourish.

Insect Investigations: Tiny Creatures, Big Learning

Sunny days bring out all kinds of insects, and children are naturally fascinated by these tiny movers and crawlers.

  • Identifying Insects: Children learn to look closely at color, shape, movement, and habitat.
  • Body Parts: Head, thorax, abdomen, antennae, wings, children discover what makes an insect an insect.
  • Life Cycles: From caterpillar to butterfly or egg to ladybug, children explore metamorphosis and change in real time.

Insect study builds observation skills, respect for living things, and a deeper appreciation for the diversity of God’s world.

Sunshine + Curiosity = Learning That Lasts

Sunny days give children the chance to explore science with their whole bodies….. running, touching, observing, questioning, and discovering. Whether they’re chasing shadows, tending the garden, or watching a ladybug crawl across a leaf, children are building foundational science skills in joyful, meaningful ways.

At Victory of the Lamb, we celebrate every sunny moment as a chance to learn, grow, and marvel at God’s creation.
