2 Timothy 2:1 – You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
It’s Super Bowl Sunday in Houston this weekend. Haven’t you heard the chatter about the two teams and their strengths?
The Atlanta Falcons have the #1 offense in the league, a major strength. Many people feel that they have the best wide receiver, the best quarterback, and the best running back tandem in all of professional football. And that’s not all – their defense has been a growing strength, getting faster and stronger as the season has gone on.
The New England Patriots also have some strengths. They’ve allowed fewer points this season than any other team. They’ve been to the Super Bowl many times in the past fifteen years. And there’s growing talk that their quarterback, Tom Brady, and their coach, Bill Belichick, will be one day widely regarded as GOAT – Greatest Of All Time.
What’s your strength? You have something that surpasses a GOAT anything. Every Christian can announce, “I’m strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” This means that we spotlight what Jesus has done, and not what we have done. When guilt is heavy, we are strong in the grace of Jesus, for what he has done brings real relief. When a sinful, lusty itch begs to be scratched, we are strong in the grace of Jesus. We hang tough in self-control until the throes of temptation subside. When we’d rather leave than love, we are strong in the grace of Christ Jesus. He loved us through thick and thin – we can be strong to do the same.
Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. It’s even better than being labeled a Greatest Of All Time football player!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, when we are weak, make us strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Crush our guilt. Give stability when we are afraid. Send us your self-control when we are under the pressure of temptation. You don’t have to help us, Lord, and yet because you are gracious you want to. Thank you for your blessings, which alone give us strength. Amen.
