Why did I do that?

Why did I do that?  Why didn’t I listen to God?  I knew that was going to end nasty…what was I thinking?  And what do I do now?  This is all so embarrassing.  What if anyone finds out?

Being overwhelmed by guilt is a terrible way to live.  It’s even worse when the guilt comes from something done on purpose.  Your sin was no accident.  You schemed.  You lied.  Then you cheered as you found a way to get yourself alone with the devil.  All along, you knew it was wrong, and yet in addiction to the rebellious moment, you didn’t care.

Your sin bought you a few hours of fake peace.  But here comes the tidal wave of real guilt.  It’s overwhelming.  The devil is still there, and he isn’t helping.  He brashly reminds you of what you did, why you did it, and how there’s no fixing it.  He makes you think it’s going to be just the two of you alone, forever.  And now it’s time to paint on a happy face for everyone else.  Are there any other options?

Come clean to the Lord.  Repent of your sins, even those done on purpose.  Repent of the scheming, of the lying, of the covering up, of the futile attempts to save yourself.  Why try to hide from God?  He already knows it all.

So repent, and look to the cross!  Jesus has been there with his arms open wide the entire time.  His ocean of forgiveness washes away even the most stubborn guilt.  He alone helps us to cope with the consequences, one step at a time.  What simple, powerful promises come from God’s heart to ours in the Bible verse below!

When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgressions.

 – Psalm 65:3
