Holy Jesus During Holy Week: Conflicted, Yet Willing

Pastor Buege went on a recent trip to Israel, and one of the stops included spending some time in the Garden of Gethsemane.  Today we’re going to enjoy footage from the actual Garden of Gethsemane, and consider what was going on in Jesus’ heart there, just before he was betrayed by Judas.

Can you imagine the conflict that Jesus had?  There was a part of him that was terrified to drink the cup of suffering…and also, a part of him that trusted his Heavenly Father completely.

Listen to this message, based on Matthew 26:38-39, “Then he said to them, ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.  Stay here and keep watch with me.’  Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.  Yet not as I will, but as you will.'”

We hope you enjoy this message!

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, it is frightening when we get a glimpse of how despicable our sins are against you.  Your holy judgment requires payment in full for each and every sin.  No wonder Jesus was conflicted in Gethsemane, as he knew what was coming in a few hours.  And yet, though conflicted, he also was perfectly willing.  He trusted you with all of his heart.  He came into the world to save sinners.  For all who can’t get past the terror of your wrath, for those weighed down by guilt, for those despairing of forgiveness…lead their troubled consciences to fully accept the gracious gift of what you have finished through Jesus.  Give them the peace that passes understanding, so that they might also fully trust you, even during times of conflict.  It’s in your holy, precious name that we pray, Amen.
