Jesus Leaves An Inheritance

Some people inherit a fortune.  Other people inherit a mess.  What would Jesus Christ leave behind for those who bear the name “Christian”?

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid (John 14:27).”

Some might look at the world and think that Jesus has left behind a mess for his people and announced, “Ha!  Take your inheritance, you ingrates!”  But that couldn’t be further from the truth.  Yes, the world is a mess, but it’s not God’s fault.  In order to cope with our messy world, Jesus Christ has left behind a generous inheritance: his peace.

Christ’s peace doesn’t wither, rust, or disintegrate into the dust.  Christ doesn’t promise peace for a little while, but knows all along that it will fade away eventually.  Christ’s peace isn’t like a limited warranty where some areas are covered, but not others.  Christ doesn’t promise peace up front, but then expect you to pay for the bill later.  You don’t have to sweat to get Christ’s peace.  You can’t possibly spend it down to zero.  You also can’t make it any better than it already is.

Why live with fear?  Why assume there’s no other option?  Let Jesus be your Savior, and accept this: God has written you into his will.  Through his spotless life, his blood shed, and his resurrection from the dead, he has left you an inheritance of endless peace.

Prayer:  Almighty and everlasting God, you alone are the comfort of the sad and the strength of those who suffer.  Build us up with the peace you have left as our eternal inheritance.  Bring relief when we are troubled; bring renewal when we are wearied; bring protection when we are innocent; and be our ever-present help in time of trouble.  You alone have overcome the world, and all power and authority is yours.  When evil seems to triumph, help us to treasure the inheritance of your peace you have given us both now and forever.  Amen.
